About the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George

The St George Charity was founded at the beginning of 2013 initially as a fundraising organisation to provide funding, equipment and services to worthy causes within the local community.

As a registered association the St George Charity also provides a legal framework for individuals or groups to raise money under its umbrella (subject to approval and due diligence).

Fundraising

The St George Charity raises money through a number of channels including the charity’s two shops in Sabinillas, which opened at the beginning of 2014 and 2016, and the shop in La Cancelada, Estepona which opened in 2017; collection tins in numerous local bars and restaurants; markets; online second hand shop; as well as money raised at a number of events such as the Sabi Street Party, quiz nights, etc. The St George Charity also receives donations from individual or group benefactors for which it is always grateful.

The St George Charity makes donations to a number of other charities: Age Concern, Manilva and Estepona, Emaus social kitchen in Estepona, Luisana – Manilva Handicapped Association, AFIMA – Fibromyalgia Charity in Manilva, Danii Children’s Cancer Charity, Open Hands Trust in Gibraltar, Hogar Betania in La Linea, Hogar Marillac in La Linea.

Helping the local community

Helping people to help others

Back in 2016 the Charity helped fund a team of local firefighters on a mission to Lesbos to provide lifesaving services for refugees in the Aegean; and this year the charity helped fund a specialist search and rescue team at the Turkish earthquake.

Supporting local individuals

The charity has supported and funded the studies of a local Spanish single mother towards her nursing qualifications. The Charity also provides crisis loans and assistance on a case-by-case basis to those people who find themselves in difficulty due to circumstances beyond their control. This was particularly prevalent during the Covid Lockdown, and the Charity still operates a food bank for those in need.

Christmas Gift Appeal

Each year, for the last nine years, between 300 and 500 children identified by Social Services in Manilva and Casares, and by the Emaus Social Kitchen in Estepona, receive a tote bag full of gifts with a value of at least 15 to 20 euros.

The St George Charity also supports the local community through donations of equipment to sporting infrastructure providing subsidies for disadvantaged youngsters to attend the local karate school, football strips for almost 200 youngsters at the CF Manilva football club, table tennis tables for the local table tennis club, netball hoops and team strips for the local netball club, chess equipment for local schools, and much more.

Last year we also began to offer heavily subsidised Self-Defence courses for both men and women with a top martial arts coach, something that we intend to expand on in the future.

Over the past 16 months, in response to the conflict in Ukraine, the charity has also provided humanitarian aid, both in Poland and Ukraine, as well as helping refugees who have arrived in our local area.

Feed a Child Campaign

In 2016, thanks to annual funding by the Saint George Charity of between 10 and 12 thousand euros, the Estepona social kitchen began to supplement its breakfast service, specifically for children to have a packed breakfast and lunch snack to take to school and not have to go hungry in the mornings. The aim is to alleviate the problems that these children suffer, mainly the lack of concentration and therefore low school performance, and to break the cycle of poverty.

On average 40 to 50 children have been served until the end of the school Term. Twice a week they have delivered to the parents a bag with everything necessary for breakfast and lunchtime snacks. In the bag, juices, shakes, yoghurts, biscuits, cheese, cereal bars, fruit, etc., are always delivered, aiming to encourage these children to have a balanced diet.

Future Plans

The Saint George Charity is in the advanced stages of realising a couple of major projects, one being a local community centre providing a focal point for a number of community services as well as staging cultural events. Another project, in collaboration with the local Council and the Emaus Charity, is the creation of a social kitchen to provide meals for the disadvantaged and socially isolated.

Become a Volunteer

The charity also supplies support and a friendly environment for our family of volunteers, so if you have a little spare time on your hands why not pop down to our shops in Sabinillas for more information on joining the Saint George family.
